Creamy, luxurious whipped lotion…isn’t that what we all are looking for? Who wants to put chemicals we can’t even pronounce on our skin? I don’t. Natural moisturizers can be expensive so I now make my own.

I developed eczema a couple of years ago and while I do not claim that this lotion is a cure (I a not a doctor), I know that it has helped relieved mine. I tried the steroid creams and oral steroids and truthfully they helped for a period of time but my flareups continued. The dermatologist’s answer? More pills and creams.

I discovered coconut oil and I am in love. It is natural and can be used in a multitude of ways. One way I am using organic, naturally refined coconut oil is in my homemade creamy, luxurious, whipped lotion.

I already used lotion daily because I hate dry skin, so I decided to make my own. This way I know exactly what is in it.

After several failed attempts I have come up with a simple, three ingredient lotion that is luxurious.

1/2 cup coconut oil, 1/2 cup shea butter, essential oil

It takes about 45 minutes because it needs to be chilled before it can be whipped but I easily work that into my housework/laundry schedule or meal preparation. Melt, set to chill and move and fold laundry or work on dinner, then whip.

Shea butter

Measure the shea butter and microwave in 30 second intervals until melted. Stir after each 30 seconds. Depending on the temperature of your house and your microwave this should take about a minute or so.

Measure the coconut oil into a small bowl and pour the melted shea butter over it and stir until the coconut oil is also melted. If the coconut oil won’t completely melt you can microwave it for about 15 seconds. We don’t want the coconut oil to get too hot.

Place the bowl in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. The mixture will start to solidify. You want there to be a firm layer on top before you begin to whip.

Stir in 10-15 drops of essential oil of your choice. Lavender is soothing, peppermint is energizing, orange is uplifting, rosemary is invigorating.

Whip the lotion until it is light and fluffy. My hand mixer has a whisk attachment that I use to whip my lotion.

Store in an airtight jar in a cool place. The melting temperature of this lotion is low due to the coconut oil. If you find it does melt, chill and re-whip.

A little bit goes a long way! You will find if you use too much it will seem oily. Start with a pea size amount on your hands and see what I mean.

Did you try this lotion? Let me know what you thought!

Here are the ingredients I use.
