I am not a mental health expert, just a woman trying to live a simple life and sharing what I learn along the way.
How do you talk to yourself?
How do you talk to yourself? Are you your biggest fan or your biggest enemy? You should be your biggest fan!
Self talk is a real thing and it makes a difference in your life. How you talk to yourself shapes who you are and how you feel about yourself.
If you tell yourself “I can _____”, guess what, you CAN!
But, if you tell yourself “I can’t ______”, then, nope, you can’t.
Sounds simplistic doesn’t it? It really is that simple. Now, I am not saying that if you tell yourself you can perform major surgery that you will be able to (Unless you are a surgeon.) What I am saying is that if you tell yourself you can be on time for work (as an example) for the first time in a week, then you can.
Positive words have an enormous impact on our outlook and actions. The flip side to that is negative words can have an even bigger impact. Don’t talk down to yourself! If you aren’t on your side, then who will be?
I want to focus on positive self talk in this post, so…
What is positive self talk?
Positive self talk is reminding yourself of your strengths. Reminding yourself how awesome you are.
Positive self talk is forgiving yourself, telling yourself that you are doing a good job. Telling yourself it’s okay if you make a mistake, because guess what, it is.
What are some of your best attributes? Write them down and keep the list handy. Tape it to your mirror, put it on your phone, and look at it often. While your at it, SMILE at yourself in the mirror.
Here are some thoughts to get you started:
- I am
When do you talk to yourself?
Start your day with positive self talk. Before you even get out of bed tell yourself it’s going to be a good day. MINDSET IS EVERYTHING! Start the day with a positive one. Here is a book on Mindset that changed my life!
During the day
Be the positive little voice in your head all day. When something throws a curve in your day, tell yourself it’s okay, I can make this work. Some days you may have to do this several times, I know I do.
Hang in there!
When you start to feel overwhelmed, take a breath and tell yourself to focus on the one thing you can accomplish right in that moment. It may be taking a minute to collect yourself and take some deep breaths so you can press on. If so, do it. Take a moment or two for yourself. You will be better for it and ready to handle what you need to.
I like to listen to soothing sounds on my phone through the Calm app, do some deep breathing, and refocus.
Forgive yourself if you need to and remind yourself that you are enough and you are doing the best you can with what you have.
You are doing great!
Finish your day with telling yourself congratulations on making it through the day. Bring to mind your successes and tell yourself great job. Tell yourself that whatever didn’t get done today will get done tomorrow. and tomorrow will be a great day.
