Corona virus is scary top news.
It’s been a little over a week since I first wrote this post. Yes, Covid-19, the corona virus is still top news and is definitely scary.
Since initially posting this, schools and businesses have closed. People are now working from home. Grocery shelves are empty.
The important thing is still to not panic. If everyone will practice social distancing and good hygeine we will get through this, and it will pass.
Be smart and check on those that are high risk.
Turn on the TV, radio, or open a web browser and you will see coronavirus is scary top news. Yes, it is a scary thought to contract a “new” virus that science is still learning about.
The thing is, this current virus is a new strand of something we have all had, the common cold. Just like we have all had the flu. The difference is there is a flu vaccine.
The coronavirus and influenza spread in similar ways. Therefore, whatever you do to prevent contracting influenza should work to prevent contracting coronavirus, COVID-19.
Know the Facts
Corona virus encompasses a family of upper respiratory diseases. There are about six different strands of virus, four of which are the common cold, others are murres and seis.
WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT CORONAVIRUS – SCARY TOP NEWS?
The best thing we can do is practice good hygiene, wash our hands and keep surfaces around us clean. Sneeze or cough into a tissue or your elbow if necessary. Be conscientious of others around you, if they are coughing or sneezing step away and wash your hands. You can practice good self-care and be proactive with your health, too.
According to the CDC, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds is the best defense against disease. Try not to touch the faucet with your freshly washed hands, use a towel to turn off the water.
On the news this morning, they said that hand sanitizer with an alcohol content of 60% or higher is effective if you are unable to wash your hands with soap and water. As a sufferer of eczema, that makes me cringe. Commercial hand sanitizer makes my hands itch and break out. I make my own hand sanitizer with aloe vera gel and essential oils. I got my basic recipe from Joybilee Farm.
Also, a top story in the news is the shortage of face masks at drug stores. Masks are not proven effective protection for contracting viruses. Most masks are designed to prevent the wearer from spreading their germs, not prevent the inhalation of airborne germs.
For a mask to be effective in preventing the inhalation of airborne germs, it needs to be fitted to the wearer’s face in the way a surgeon’s mask is fitted. The best mask to prevent inhaling germs is an n95 Respirator Mask. This mask filters the air the wearer breathes.
This is the type of mask healthcare workers wear around patients with highly infectious diseases. The n95 Respirator Mask is not designed to be worn for extended periods of time (all day) as they restrict the flow of oxygen to the wearer. They also are not intended for reuse.
If you choose to wear a mask, it is important not to touch your face under the mask just as it is important not to touch your nose, eyes, or mouth without washing your hands first. Again, simple good hygiene is the key to good health.
SELF-CARE during Corona Virus
Along with good hygiene, basic self-care can help prevent illness. As part of my daily routine I drink a glass of orange every morning. Orange juice is a good source of vitamin C, potassium, and folate. Each of these nutrients help support a healthy immune system and overall health. You can also purchase orange juice fortified with calcium, which is what I drink, as a woman of my age needs to be proactive against osteoporosis.
As an allergy sufferer I also use a Neti-Pot in the morning and at night to keep my sinus passages clean. It helps tremendously! I was nervous at first, but it is not as bad as it may sound. I sleep better now too because I can breathe.
Whenever I do begin to feel under the weather, I take Echinacea to boost my immune system. Echinacea is an herbal supplement found at drug and health food stores. I get mine here.
In addition to supplements, taking time each day to practice self-care helps to boost mood, physical and mental health, as well as a general sense of well-being. You can read my post on Self-Care here.
DO YOU DRINK GREEN TEA?
Drinking green tea will help detox your system and may inhibit viruses like influenza. Green tea has many health benefits, it is the “healthiest beverage on the planet”. (healthline.com)
Be sure to follow the manufacturers directions when using surface cleaners. Most need to sit on the surface somewhere around 30 seconds to kill bacteria before wiping the surface.
Unless you are at a high risk of contracting coronavirus, general good hygiene and common sense should be enough to prevent illness.
If you are sick, please stay home!
