Rich, creamy whipped homemade buttercream frosting! My mouth waters just saying the words. Yum! I love this frosting.
Buttercream frosting spreads easily and adds a richness to any cake or cookie it is on. It can be colored to decorate a fancy cake or leave it beautifully white. This frosting recipe whips up quickly and is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
My husband says I have finally mastered buttercream frosting with this recipe. On a whim, I used whipping cream instead of milk as my mother’s recipe calls for. It turned out great!
This homemade buttercream frosting is not greasy like you get if you use shortening. Gross! This is pure smooth, creamy deliciousness
I like to leave it white and decorate it with chocolate chips, sprinkles, crushed candy bars or cookies. Decorate a chocolate cake with this whipped buttercream icing and add some sliced strawberries…..oh, chocolate covered strawberries and cream. WOW! You don’t get much better than that.
A little food coloring and you have a beautiful, spreadable, delicious icing for cupcakes. Add some seasonal cake picks and you’re party dessert is ready.
What you need
This homemade buttercream frosting consists of four ingredients; butter (not margarine), vanilla (I only user real vanilla), powdered sugar, and heavy whipping cream. If you do not have heavy whipping cream, you may substitute milk.
You will also need a mixer. A hand mixer will work but a stand mixer will make it easier. This is the one I use. For my birthday this year, my daughter gave me the pour shield for my mixer. I love it! It keeps me from making as big of a mess.
Best Homemade Whipped Buttercream Frosting
Set out 1 cup of butter to soften. Once it is soft, place it in your mixer and a beat until creamy. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla and mix.
Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Mixing well between.
Add heavy whipping cream, one tablespoon at a time until the frosting/icing reaches the desired consistancy.
(If you feel like you added too much cream, simply add a little more powdered sugar.)
I hope you enjoy this homemade buttercream frosting. It truly is one of my favorites. My other favorite is the icing for my homemade Texas Sheet Cake, it is a chocolate fudge-like icing that is sure make you smile.
